We move over to the model of the city of Hamburg at the Rathausmarkt. There, we will first explain the layout of the city to give you an overview. There is plenty to see and discuss around the Rathausmarkt. After visiting the Rathausdiele, the City Hall's foyer, we will move to the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce in the historic Stock Exchange building, Germany's oldest active stock exchange, founded in 1558. We will pass impressive Kontorhäuser, the commercial buildings of Hamburg merchants built around 1900, on our way to the St. Nikolai Memorial. At the ruins of the neo-Gothic church built in the 1850s, we will learn about the history of the St. Nikolai parish and its inhabitants. We will cross the Willy-Brandt-Straße together, pass by the Deutsche Bundesbank, and stroll through the Deichstraße. This street offers a wonderful cross-section of traditional house styles from the 14th to the 18th century. Here we can sense how people in Hamburg lived and worked 500 years ago. We will then cross over the former sailing ship harbor into the Speicherstadt. There, we will learn how the Emperor enticed Hamburg to join the Reich and which companies still trade tea, coffee, and Oriental rugs today. It's just a short step to Hamburg's newest district: HafenCity. Europe's largest inner-city urban development project sets standards in architecture and waterfront living. The highlight is the view of Hamburg's new landmark: the Elbphilharmonie. Inaugurated in 2017, it has quickly become a beloved icon despite high construction costs, affectionately called "Elphi".
