Further information
Walk with me in the footsteps of James Loeb (b. 1867 in New York City; d. 1933 in Murnau) and his wife Marie Antonie Loeb, née Schmidt, widowed Hambuechen (b. 1864 in Coburg; d. 1933 in Murnau). James Loeb is one of 18 honorary citizens of Murnau to date (including one woman). He and his wife are named in the Murnau town hall as benefactors and donors. They lived in Murnau-Hochried intermittently for about ten years and mainly for about twelve years.we walk together for about 6 km on paved paths with an elevation gain of about 60 metres from the James Loeb House via the town centre, the Münter House, the Loeb family burial site, to the former country house in Murnau-Hochried and along the southern shore of Lake Staffelsee back to Murnau. We will stop at several points and I will explain aspects of these two people, familiarising you with these two special people, but also with the people they worked with, e.g. Frank Damrosch, Emil Kraepelin and Luise Kiesselbach. what did James Loeb study and work, what did Marie Antonie do, and how did they meet? why did they come to Murnau, and how and with whom did they live in Murnau-Hochried? How did they work in Murnau, but also in Munich, New York City and Harvard, and where are their foundations still active today? What role did music play for James Loeb, with whom did he regularly make music? What role did the ancient art and literature of ancient Rome and the ancient Greek republics play for James Loeb, and what role does James Loeb still play for ancient art and literature today? Where can you find out more about James and Marie Antonie Loeb, in books or on site? This tour takes just under 3 hours at a leisurely pace. You can also end the tour in Murnau-Hochried (after about 4 km) and return by taxi, bus or the car you parked there earlier.
